Cleveland Announces New Name For MLB Team

The American League will have a new team name without an expansion team.  Cleveland's Major League Baseball team, known since 1915 as the Indians, will now be the Cleveland Guardians.

At the end of 2020, the organization announced that it was dropping its 10 year nickname out of social awareness in the wake of events like the George Floyd killing.

The new name was announced today with a video narrated by Tom Hanks.

I LOVE IT! Thank you Cleveland! I wish mom was alive, she was a big activist for sports teams changing their names over in the 90s, and this brings such tears of happiness. Thanks to you too, Mike!

I may be unpopular in my thinking (and that's okay) but personally I think this was a dumb idea. - I've read where even Native Americans themselves don't see what the fuss was all about and dislike the new name they came up with. Anyway what's done is done now but we all don't have to like it.

I don't think it's the name, it was a tribute to a beloved native american player, as much as the cartoonish mascots and cheers that may have been perceived as mocking to the culture.
Sometimes, we need to put ourselves in other's shoes to really understand.
