There is a cost in taking on your own department. The aftermath of a wildfire leads to the discovery of murdered women. Detective Eve Ronin, already unpopular because of her early promotion to robbery-homicide finds out that she will have to take on her own department to get to the bottom of this case. It is very suspenseful and definitely worth the read.
This is the second of the currently four Eve Ronin series books. You can find it by clicking here.
Former Soviet Leader Mikhail Gorbachev has died. He was 91 and was suffering from an undisclosed long illness.
Gorbachev ruled the Soviet Union from 1985 to 1991 and is credited largely by the West for bringing positive reforms including openness or glasnost. In Russia, he is most likely blamed for the fall of the Soviet Union.
From the Puget Sound Media blog, from which I shamelessly borrowed these pictures. Last Saturday, I drove through massive detours to attend the Radio Conference Call Meetup at the West Seattle Golf Course, in (where else?!) West Seattle.
I met Jason Remington, the blogger from Puget Sound Media in person for the first time, even though I've felt like we have been friends for well over 10 years.
In top left picture, I'm with longtime Seattle radio newspaper columnist Victor Stredicke. Below is Klem Daniels, who I learned, did some production work for my cousin, Stan, a few years ago.
On the right, my pal, Leonard Barokas poses with two of his old radio cohorts, Ron Erak, and Paul Thompson.
Mariner fans were delighted. as the usually cautious organization has been reported to reach a deal with its star centerfielder Julio Rodriquez. The incentive laden contract would net the rookie All Star 209 million dollars, although it could be worth 409 million over the next 15 years.
I don't know this song, which was the opening number for the Rolling Stones tribute band, Stonesy, but I wanted to use this because the crowd was thinner, and I could get better shots of the stage.
Len Dawson, one of the best known AFL quarterbacks, the first AFL player to quarterback in the Super Bowl and the second AFL quarterback to win a Super Bowl has died. Dawson played for the Kansas City Chiefs. He was 87.
He is pictured above with current Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who is carving his own place in the team's history.
We saw the last outdoor concert in Issaquah with Stonesy, a Seattle based Rolling Stones tribute band. Playing from 7pm until dusk, they did a wonderful job of recreating some of the band's best music.
In my quest to read the entire Eve Ronin series. I've started Bone Canyon by Lee Goldberg. This is the second book in the series and my third since I started with the last one, Movieland.
I was very shocked and saddened to read about the passing of Walla Walla High School classmate Jim Angell. Jimmy was a newspaper guy, he wrote a rock music column in the Wa-Hi Journal and eventually became the editor of the paper.
We both went to WSU and as I remember, were in Communications 101 together. Jim would continue his reporter career with the Daily Evergreen, the WSU daily paper. He would also become the editor of that paper.
I did not have a car during my first year at school, so I would ride back and forth in his car, having discussions about topics of the day. I did not remember if I helped him with gas expenses or thanked him properly.
Angell would wind up working in journalism in Wyoming. The video above was one I found as I scoured You Tube.
Jim Angell was talented, articulate, friendly, generous, and humble. I last saw him at our Class's 40th reunion in July of 2016, where we joined other friends in the golf scramble.
Jim is seated the second to the left. We were the only fivesome and the last to finish. We celebrated in the clubhouse.
Later in the evening, he would join friends Bill and John jamming on guitar at the reunion dinner.
Last night (August 16th, 2022) we watched Nite Wave perform at the Issaquah Community Center. The band, that specializes in 1980s new wave, performed this song with a 12-year-old guitarist from the audience.
An enthusiastic crowd picnicked, danced and enjoyed a beautiful summer evening.
Seattle band Heart rocked the music scene in the mid 70s. Original bassist and co founder of the group, Steve Fossen is featured in the Sunday Supplement of the Seattle Times, Pacific NW.
I was able to get my Dreamboat Annie album cover autographed by Fossen (pictured below) when he was with a different band in the mid 80s. My roommates were having an afterhours party in which he attended.
In 1967, ABC came up with a summer replacement show that highlighted the then super popular LA beach scene.
Malibu U, with college terms for its stars and guests, featured current bands, corny humor, and teens in bathing suits.
I'm probably one of a small handful of viewers that think nostalgically about this show. I remember that we were at Seaside when I watched the Doors perform on the show. I wonder how I was able to watch with one TV and my parents there.
Lost Hills is the first book in Lee Goldberg's Eve Ronin series. Movieland was his latest and the first of that series that I read. I was so blown away by Lee's latest, that I have decided to read the entire series.
Lost Hills does not disappoint, it's not so much of a "who done it" as much as a connecting the dots. Goldberg does an excellent job of establishing the characters. Eve Ronin is a detective for the Los Angeles County Sherriff's Department. She is caught on video in a single-handed arrest of a popular movie star. Because the video went viral, the department, which is facing a public relations nightmare from an ongoing scandal, promotes her to robbery-homicide. This is a coveted position in the department and her fellow cops believe she is well out of her league, but not her.
After a horrific crime, too grisly to mention, Eve becomes part of the investigation and tries to prove that she can play with the big boys and girls.
Just like Movieland, there is great imagery and character development. You can find Lost Hills by clicking here.
Word has been received that Olivia Newton John, who won hearts with her sweet voice and wholesome looks has died. Newton-John probably was most famous for playing Sandy in the movie musical Grease
Seafair is back in swing after a 3-year hiatus due to Covid. The airshow by the US Navy's Blue Angels, is probably just as popular as the hydroplane races.
Deb and I found a great place to watch at Aubrey Davis Park in Mercer Island.
Seafair is back, after a 3 year absence due to COVID. But one very important figure in the Seattle celebration is sadly missing. Pat O'Day, died in 2020.
The Walla Walla Padres played in Borleske Stadium in the 70s. There were a Class A farm club of the San Diego Padres. They were a member of the Northwest League.
I found this old program on Google. I had a collection of programs from the first season that Walla Walla was in the Northwest League. It was 1969 and they were known as the Walla Walla Bears. I had lost them over the years.
Puget Sound Media blog has asked me to pass this along. August 27th, 2022 at the West Seattle Golf Course will be a meet up of Seattle radio and TV people sponsored by NW Radio Conference Call.
Everyone is welcome, you can get details by clicking here.
Vin Scully, who announced Dodger games for 67 years has died. It takes me back to Mariner announcer Dave Niehaus death, when you hear a voice for decades, it becomes a part of your family. Ken Levine, who hosted a Dodger radio show, has this tribute, click here.
I was saddened to hear of the death of Nichelle Nichols. Nichols played Lt Uhura, an officer on the US Enterprise. It was a groundbreaking role, the first African American woman to play a non-traditional role.
Of course, her character resonated with me because she was a powerful woman, again, also unusual for TV shows of that era.
