Kids Parade On Leonard Street

My street growing up until 2nd grade, I have faded memories of doing this whether it was that year or not. This was early to mid 60s. I remember a float of a canoe and us dressing up as Indians and walking inside the converted cardboard box. It may be politically incorrect today.

We lived on the corner of Leonard and Modoc.

Steve still lives in Walla Walla and sent this to me. Coincidentally, he does not live far from this neighborhood.

Recalling the Leonard Street Kids Fourth of July Parade from 1960s Walla Walla brings back the ultimate sense of vintage Americana. Growing up in Walla Walla in the 1960s meant the best part of the summer wasn't a giant commercial event; it was the magic of the Leonard Street kids' parade. We would spend days gathering crepe paper, cards, and clothespins to transform our bicycles into patriotic masterpieces. There was nothing quite like the sound of playing cards clicking against bicycle spokes as we proudly marched down the street. While the city's main celebrations eventually grew and moved over to places like Pioneer Park, the grassroots community spirit of Leonard Street is the standard of togetherness I still look for today. We didn't have massive laser shows, but we had something better, a neighborhood that felt like a family.
