Great post and great relevant song Mike. One of the most distinct, twinkling instruments heard in the background of Summer Breeze is actually a child's toy piano. Before launching a soft rock career, native Texans Jim Seals and Dash Crofts were members of The Champs. This is the rock-and-roll band famous for the massive late 1950s instrumental hit Tequila. The duo actively chose to hone a gentle, acoustic sound after performing on the same bills as heavy rock acts like Eric Clapton and Deep Purple. They found themselves turned off by the aggressive volume and chaotic lifestyle of the heavy metal scene. The iconic line "blowing through the jasmine in my mind" uses the summer-blooming flower to intentionally trigger immediate feelings of harmony, peace, and nostalgia. Jim Seals stated in a 1975 interview with Melody Maker that the song is fundamentally about a simple man coming home from a hard day's work, hearing his dog bark, and finding ultimate security. Both musicians were deeply dedicated to the Baháʼí Faith. They used their lyrics to explore spiritual landscapes, with Seals noting that the track addresses the "prison of self" how a person can become paranoid and insecure without a clear, compassionate direction in life. Though many casual fans mistake Summer Breeze for their debut album, it was actually their fourth. The track reached No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and propelled the album to double-platinum status. The track has incredible cross-genre staying power. The Isley Brothers released a highly successful, funk-infused soul cover in 1974. Decades later, the gothic metal band Type O Negative reinvented it as a slow, heavy, sludgy metal track. Over time, the song became a definitive pillar of the "Yacht Rock" genre. Rolling Stone officially ranked it at number 13 on its list of the "Best Summer Songs of All Time".
