A few years ago, Kathy Brock retired from her primetime job anchoring the news at WLS TV in Chicago.  She was at the station for about 28 years.

 What's amazing is that at WSU, we were in the same TV news class, and I believe we did a newscast together, of course, it was only on cable, but I actually rubbed elbows with greatness. I also had a couple other Communications classes with her. 

Out of curiosity, I scoured You Tube last night, looking for videos and found some tributes to her as she did her last newscast.  Above is one of several.  

Kathy is a native of Pasco, Washington.  

WLS Anchor, Cougar Classmate Kathy Brock To Retire

After 27 years including the last 24 as 6pm Anchor at WLS in Chicago, Pasco native Kathy Brock is leaving the rigors of the newsroom.  The 58 year old Brock announced that she will retire from Chicago's ABC affiliate after her June 27th newscast.  Brock also anchored the station's 10pm cast.
Brock and I worked together from 1980-1981 in the Cable 8 closed circuit newscast at WSU, part of the school's TV news class led by Glenn Johnson.
After graduation, she started with  Tri-Cities TV (KEPR)  like her sister, Kerry.  Kerry Brock would go on to anchor at KOMO 4 in Seattle, by coincidence, also an ABC affiliate.
Before her Chicago job, Brock also worked at KUTV in Salt Lake City, before that, she had worked in Boise.
Brock is a graduate of Pasco High School and had family in Walla Walla.
I know Kathy as a very hard worker with amazing focus.  We congratulate her on a wonderful career and wish her the best in retirement.

Kathy Brock Has Facebook Fan Page

Kathy Brock, the WSU graduate who is evening news anchor in Chicago has a fan page on Facebook.
Brock, who was a classmate of mine in the Com department, is a product of the Tri Cities.  Her grandparents lived in Walla Walla.  Brock has been with WLS TV since 1990.  The WLS site says the 6 and 10 newscasts that she co-anchors are the most watched newscasts in the market.

WSU's Glenn Johnson To Begin Retirement

Spokane TV station KHQ reports that after 30 plus years, veteran Communications Professor Glenn Johnson will begin retirement. The reports says that Johnson will remain on campus to teach a Broadcast Management class and to advise students.
There is little doubt that Johnson, who arrived on campus in the fall of 1979, revolutionized the already heralded department.  Bringing real life experience from working as an anchor in Sacramento, Johnson turned classrooms into working news shops.  With tough love and integrity, he earned the respect and lifelong friendship of nearly the entire department.
With a rich "made for broadcasting voice",Johnson became the stadium announcer for the WSU Cougar Football  and Men's Basketball teams.   Some of Johnson's catchphrases like "and another Cougar first down" and "NO GAIN" (in an even deeper voice) are unforgettable. 
He is currently mayor of Pullman as well as doing having a hand in everything in the region.  Some of the more well known Cougar graduates who were in Glenn's class include WLS anchor Kathy Brock and ESPN's Cindy Brunson.

Superbowl XLI It's Glamourous vs Glamourless

Two Midwest Powerhouses will collide one week from this Sunday in Miami in this year's Superbowl. The Chicago Bears and the Indianapolis Colts represent 2 cities that are close in distance but lightyears apart in lifestyle.
Representing the NFC is the Bears from Chicago, home to Michael Jordan, Oprah Winfrey, Ernie Banks, Kathy Brock, Lou Piniella and Wrigley Field, large enough to have 2 major league baseball teams. Chicago's last Superbowl appearance was 1986 when Walter Payton and William "The Refridgerator" Perry lead the team to it's only Superbowl win. It is good that the team that barely knocked our Seahawks out of this year's playoffs is the one going to the Superbowl.
The Colts (from the AFC) are playing in their first Superbowl since their midnight move from Baltimore some 20 years ago. Indianapolis has the Indy 500 and is capital of Indiana, and has a small town feel to it. It will also be the first Superbowl for Superstar quarterback Peyton Manning.
Two other Superbowls that had teams from neighboring cities were in 1995 when the San Francisco 49ers beat the San Diego Chargers and 1991 when the New York Giants defeated the

Coug Alum Kathy Brock Anchors The News In Chicago

Northwest native Kathy Brock has been anchoring the 6:00 and 10:00 News for WLS-TV since 2003. She graduated from WSU in 1981 and was a classmate of mine in TV Journalism class.
Brock has won 2 Chicago Emmy Awards and received national recognition for a project that in Mali, West Africa. She is a proud product of Pasco Washington. Her grandparents lived for many years in Walla Walla. I believe her Grandfather, Lewy Carpenter sold a house to my parents many years ago.
