In the early 1990s, KIRO 7 TV in Seattle had two personalities who would eventually work for national networks. Aaron Brown, originally was an anchor for KING 5, would go on to ABC and eventually, a prime anchor spot on CNN and Linda Cohn, who was soon bound for ESPN.
I have long been a fan of Cohn because of her special talent of being able to relate with her audience. She comes across on TV as a friend with whom you want to chat about sports.
Cohn-Head (a nickname that she got from an SNL skit) chronicles her journey from growing up in the New York area, to her struggles to fit in at college, to her desire to break into what at the time was a male dominated sports broadcasting field.
What I did not know is that Cohn was a star goalie on her school's women ice hockey team. She devotes a chapter to her time in the Seattle area, she actually turned down the first offer that ESPN made to bring her aboard. She also writes about her family, her struggles to balance her home life to the demands of having a high profile job.
The impression that I have is that Linda's success is because of her reliability and her genuineness. She loves sports and she loves her job.

Popular Radio Team Interview Seattle Mayor
Mayor Ed Murray appeared on the Ron And Don Show after turning down previous offers to speak with them. Ron And Don have held the KIRO Drive Time position for over a decade. Known more as entertainers than political commentators, Don O'Neill has been famously critical of the mayor's policies. O'Neill is generally the loudest and most opinionated of the pair. Ron Upshaw, his partner, is more explanatory and even keeledIn this segment, O'Neill appears articulate and on point.

Mayor Murray To Appear On Don And Ron
Seattle mayor Ed Murray will be a guest on the Ron And Don Show on KIRO FM 97.3 tonight (March 9th, 2017). Although the show, with a huge audience skews mostly toward entertainment rather than politics, the pair have been extremely critical toward Murray on issues ranging from homeless encampments to the city's alleged refusal to pay for a veteran police detective's surgery. Don has been the main instigator on criticism of the mayor's policies. He lives in Seattle.
The appearance has been announced for 6:00pm. Ron and Don, have had the KIRO Drive Time position for well over 10 years starting on 710 AM than moving to 97.3 FM when the AM station went to an all sports format. Murray will be up for election later this year.

Helen Sommers--Veteran Washington Legislator
Helen Sommers, who was the first Democrat elected from her district in decades in 1972, and would continue in the Washington House Of Representatives for 36 years, has died. Today, of course, her district, as is most of Seattle, totally dominated by the Democratic party. Sommers had the second longest legislative career in Washington history. She was known for being socially Liberal and fiscally moderate. She also, at many times, chaired the house appropriations committee.
Helen Sommers was 84.

Arnold Self Terminates As Apprentice Host
Former California governor/actor Arnold Schwarzenegger has announced he will no longer host the Celebrity Apprentice. The show, which launched Donald Trump's celebrity, reportedly did not do well in the ratings, as Trump detractors probably wanted nothing to do with the show, while Trump supporters probably could not accept anyone else in the role. It may also be that the show had run it's course.
It's debatable as to how effective the Governor was, he had a lookalike nephew as one of his advisors and often spun stories of his days as a body builder in Austria.
His catch phrase was "your terminated, now get to the chopper!"

Whitman College--Only Current Unbeaten Team In US
This May, it will mark 28 years since I moved to the Seattle area from Walla Walla, but I can't help to have a little bit of pride when something wonderful happens in the old home town. Whitman College, the small liberal arts college within walking distance from the house where I grew up is making national news. What's even more incredible, it's sports news. US News reports that the Whitman Blues, they are no longer the Fighting Missionaries, are they only unbeaten men's college basketball team at any level in the nation.
At one time, Whitman's football team was a powerhouse, coached by the legendary Raymond Vincent Borleske. Walla Wallans may not know of Coach Borleske, but probably know the name. The local stadium was named after him.
A few decades ago, the school discarded it's football program on account of economics. Basketball remained, not achieving much more than yawns. Until now
The school's academics have been source of pride to the community, however, it's often Liberal social outlook often infuriates local Conservatives.
Whitman at one time was an NAIA school, it's now NCAA Division III.

Hidden Figures--Great Movie
Last Tuesday, having a day off, I decided to catch the movie Hidden Figures. it is a true story of three brilliant African-American women who worked at NASA. It is the early 60s and the Jim Crow segregation laws are in effect. The women are good hard workers, but get little respect because of their gender and race.
The main character is Katherine, an amazing mathematician, she leaves the segregated computer room to have an assignment at the space task room. She is mistaken at first for the cleaning lady. She is not allowed to use the ladies room near where she works, so she has to cross the compound everytime she needs to go.
Katherine's two friends each have their own ambitions, to which they each have hurdles they need to overcome because of their race.
Kevin Costner is great as Mr Harrison, Katherine's stressed out, but "good at heart" boss. Jim Parsons of TV's "The Big Bang Theory" plays Katherine's biggest detractor.
I watched the film at the Regal Issaquah Highlands, one of the area's newest theatres.

Inslee For President?
In the media, there is talk of Washington governor Jay Inslee making a run for president. The governor's profile has risen with his and Attorney General Bob Ferguson's successful fight against Trump's travel ban.
While sometimes Inslee's policies have been questioned even by fellow Democrats, Washington seems to have a thriving economy.
Inslee seems to have a knack of winning elections. Like Trump in 2016, Inslee was seen by everyone as the underdog against popular Attorney General Rob McKenna in the race to be Washington's governor. Inslee pulled out the victory. In 1998, he beat a incumbent Rick White to represent Washington's 1st Congressional District in the House of Representatives.
The last Washington figure to run for president was Senator Henry "Scoop" Jackson in 1976. Jackson was one of the last "cold warriors" in the Democratic party. He lost the nomination to Governor Jimmy Carter who would go on to win the White House. There is no doubt that since then, our state has become a much bigger player on the national stage.

Big Snafu At Oscars--Wrong Picture Announced
It was a smooth night at the Academy Awards, host Jimmy Kimmel seemed comfortable as the host of the event in spite of offending some Trump supported for what seemed to be light hearted jokes about the president and some other folks for joking about an African American actor's name. To top it off, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the making of Bonnie And Clyde, the two starts of the movie, Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty (pictured) were on stage to announce the best picture.
But in the biggest mess up in Oscar history, La La Land was announced by Dunaway, but after the large contingent had started it's speeches it was announced that the winner was Moonlight. The world was stunned and both facebook and twitter lit up like a Christmas tree. The cause of the error, it was later announced was because the pair had been given the wrong envelope.

Palm Springs II-The Escape Room
With our nephews and my in-laws, we went to a Palm Spring Escape Room. A group is put into a room and is put on the clock. It is up to the group to find and solve a series of puzzles to be able to exit the room. We were grouped with another family that had children and a talent for that kind of thing.
We were given an hour to find a way to solve the puzzles. With the help of the other family in our group we were able to get out with 12 minutes left. We were told that only 28% are able to solve the puzzles in the allotted time.
We finished the evening with a great dinner at Trio in downtown Palm Springs.

RIP: Alan Colmes
Greta Van Susteren who has worked for both Fox and MSNBC, pays tribute to one of the few Liberals at Fox, Alan Colmes who passed away at 66. Because he worked for the Conservative leaning network, Colmes was often not taken seriously by those who shared his views. Colmes also seemed calm compared with the very combative Sean Hannity when they debated on Hannity And Colmes, a Fox prime time show. Colmes left that show in 2009, leaving Hannity to do the show solo.

LA III--Trip To Lighten Up Lounge
I told my cousin Burl that I would be in town and was invited to the infamous Lighten Up Lounge to watch him do his internet radio show "True Crime Uncensored". The show, on internet radio, allows Burl to combine his two passions, radio, he was a former DJ for KJR and KOL in Seattle and writing "true crime" in which he has won awards for his many books.
These days, Burl lives in the LA area and teams up with another former Seattle area DJ, Magic Matt Alan, to do his own show as well as appearing on Matt's show, Outlaw Radio.
True Crime Uncensored has riveting true stories of notorious crime. I don't know if you could find anything like it anywhere, the show runs Saturdays at 2:00 pm Pacific Time. You can also listen on podcast by clicking on mixcloud to Burl Barer.
The Lighten Up Lounge is an 1876 Virginia City Type bar in a backyard somewhere in the LA area.
Since I also love radio and had not seen Burl in well over 10 years, it made for a fun afternoon.

LA II--Battling The Rainstorm
The next morning we were greeted with a familiar sight. Good thing we don't come down for the weather, oh wait, we do. A rainstorm of historic proportions had hit the town. It was as bad as last week's rainstorm in Seattle.
Not realizing the magnitude of the situation, we set out in our rented Camaro (above) to the Griffith Observatory (bottom picture) where there was very little to observe. We did have an enjoyable day at the planetarium. The views got a little better, but the driving conditions did not improve. After a hazardous drive, we were back safely at the hotel. Our dinner engagement with some of our friends was cancelled and we had nice dinner at the hotel.

KIRO Radio Recalls KIRO 7 TV Folly
KIRO 97.3 Radio ran a report of a revolutionary idea that the TV side would undertake in 1993. It was known as news "Out Of The Box". It had actually been used in the past for news teases. Instead of broadcasting from the studio, they deliver the news from the news room. Anyway, KIRO news historian Felix Banel delivered this report. Click here. The experiment did not even last a year.

Super Sunday Fun
Lady Gaga performs at halftime at this year's Super Bowl. Deb and I watched with our friends at Twin Peaks Sports Bar in Tukwila. Every table had it's own TV and there is a bank of big screen TVs over the bar. We all left before the game ended due to reports of incoming snow. As you probably now know it was a tale of two halves. The Atlanta Falcons cruised to large early lead only to have the New England Patriots come back in the second half to win. The crowd mostly cheered Atlanta, but there was also a very audible section of New England fans.

Seahawk Kenny Easley Inducted Into the Hall Of Fame
The Seahawks will not play in this year's Super Bowl, but fans from the '80s will be happy to know that Safety Kenny Easley was voted into the Pro Football Hall Of Fame.
Easley was a UCLA product who played his entire career with the 'Hawks. He was known for his hard hitting style which earned him the nickname "The Enforcer". He was an All Pro three consecutive years from 1983-1985. He was selected AP Defensive Player Of Year in 1984.
Easley was forced to retire early from football when it was discovered that he had irreversible kidney damage. According to the Seattle Times football writer Bob Condotta, he had never been previously considered for the Hall Of Fame, however this year he had been nominated by the Veteran's Committee.

Just Like The 80s--Both Parties Lead By Women
Back in the Reagan-Bush years, two great female leaders were making names for themselves. Karen Marchioro was the state chair of the Washington Democratic Party. She was hardscrabble plain spoken and represented everything Democratic. Jennifer Dunn led the Washington Republican Party, she was known for cordiality. She was about hair in place and fashionable dress. She represented everything Republican.
Dunn would later serve our district in congress. Marchioro became a well regarded political consultant. Although, they were polar opposites, it seemed like the two had mutual respect for one another. The real irony is that Marchioro and Dunn died within a week of each other in 2007. Marchioro had a long bout with cancer. Dunn was just 66 when she died suddenly of a pulmonary embolism. Both were the first women chairs of their respected parties.
While both Marchioro and Dunn served their parties during the same time frame (1981-1992), Susan Hutchison has served as Republican chair since 2013. Tina Podlodowski was elected last Satuday. Just like the previous pair, their styles represent their parties. Unlike the other two, it is doubtful that the two would ever find common ground. Podlodowski wants to work to get Democrats elected in every county in the state. Hutchison is one of the country's most outspoken Trump supportors.
