The Washington State Cougars are getting some emphatic support in their  quest to take the 2018 Apple Cup.  This sign is on the main highway in Maple Valley. Go Cougs!

Once again, we have an Apple Cup that matters.  You can always throw out the records in Apple Cup matches, but  the Dawgs may be the Coug's toughest test.  The game will be this Friday, November 23rd at 5:30.  The winner is claim the Pac 12 North title.

Cougs Best Regular Season In Years, Ends In Downer

Cougar Coach Mike Leach doesn't show high regard for reporters, opponents, or his staff and for that matter, himself in this diatribe after our 45-10 defeat in the Apple Cup.  Hostility developed between Leach and reporters for his not speaking to questions about the health of the starting quarterback Luke Falk.
 Falk was carted off the field in the Cougars victory over Colorado, it was not known until game time that back up quarterback Peyton Bender would play.

Cougs Earn Bowl Eligibility

For the first time since 2006, the Washington State Cougars became bowl eligible with a 49-37 win over the Utah Utes.  Although a bowl invitation is not guaranteed, a team cannot play in a bowl game unless it has 6 or more wins.  This season with more Pac 12 schools  attaining bowl eligibility than available bowl games, it is imparitive for the Cougs to be Washington in this year's Apple Cup.  The annual cross state rivalry will be played Friday in Seattle.

Rotten Apple Cup Results In Husky Win

Apple Cup 2009 will go down as a match where a win starved Washington Husky team trounced the even more inept Washington State Cougars 30-0. While the Cougar defense played with heart in the first half, holding the Huskies to 10 points, the offense could not rise to the challenge, playing 3 quarterbacks, two with injuries and never getting inside the Husky 33 yard line. Suddenly, Washington's record looks better at 4 and 7, while the WSU Cougars are in need of evaluating their program to see if their is a way out of this slump.

No Go For Apple Cup At Qwest

The controversial plan to make Qwest Field the permanent home for the Apple Cup has been abandoned after athletic directors from both Washington and Washington State failed to agree
on how tickets would be allotted between the two schools.

Permanent Move For The Apple Cup?

There is buzz in the Pacific Northwest about moving the Apple Cup to Downtown Seattle's Qwest Field. The game is the annual rivalry between the Washington State Cougars and the Washington Huskies. Presently it alternates between the home fields of the two schools, however, since it is played close to the Thanksgiving Break, many Washington State students leave the area at that time.
Most fans think that this will give the Washington Huskies an unfair advantage, the game originally alternated between Husky Stadium and Spokane's Joe Albi, however, improvements at Martin Stadium in Pullman made it possible for the game to be played there in 1982. It has allowed the Cougs to have a 10-3 edge on their home field since then.

Apple Cup Today

The Apple Cup will start shortly. Whereas, in the past, it had bowl significance, this year it stands as a symbol of the state of Washington's frustration with it's athletic programs. It caps off a year where the Sonics left town, the Mariners finished last, the Seahawks cannot buy a win and both the Cougars and Huskies where trounced weekly by their opponents.

100th Apple Cup Meeting This Saturday

It's that time again, this weekend Washington and Washington State will meet for the annual "Apple Cup" football game. Last year the Huskies beat us on our own field, two years ago, we won at Huskie Stadium. I was at that game and remember all the trash talking by the Huskie fans. It made the victory much more satisfying. Here is a scene from the celebration.
