John Sterling, the recently retired voice of the New York Yankeed, died today (Monday, May 4th, 2026). He was definitely an original, I heard his Yankee victory calls on soundbites on SportsRadio 950.
After he retired in 2024, Sterling was replaced by Dave Sims, who previously was the TV and radio announcer for the Mariners.

He was the true sound of summer. While the microphone has gone quiet, the echo of his unforgettable braodcasts will live in the hearts of fans for generations. For decades his voice was the comforting soundtrack to our Aprils through Octobers. Baseball simply won't sound the same without him.
