Betty White Dead At 99

Betty White, who played on two iconic TV series, the Golden Girls and The Mary Tyler Moore show, both after reaching the age of 50, as well as being the oldest person to host SNL, has died.

A big 100th birthday party had been announced for White, whose birthday would've have been January 17th.  Perhaps, a tribute will air in its place.

Much like George Burns, a generation earlier. White's durability in an industry known for not always being kind to seniors, helped make her a beloved figure

Snow In Our Backyard

In the rush rush Puget Sound area, we often think of snow as cold and slippery as well as inconvenient. Our favorite events get cancelled and it's tougher to get to work

It's easy to forget, though, how beautiful it can be.

Sun Bowl Is On For WSU

It looks now like the Cougs will play in the Sun Bowl.    It has been reported that Central Michigan, whose matchup with Boise State in the Arizona Bowl has been cancelled, will now play the Cougars. The Miami Hurricanes had been forced to cancel it's trip to the Sun Bowl because of COVID.
The Sun Bowl will be played on New Year's Eve at 9am pst.

Miami Pulls Out Of Sun Bowl Because Of COVID

The Bowl game that the WSU Cougs worked so hard to get to may not happen.  The Miami Hurricanes have pulled out of the Tony The Tiger Sun Bowl because of players out with Covid.

The Cougs are already in El Paso where the game was to be played.  The last word that I have read is that the Sun Bowl committee is looking for a team to replace the Hurricanes.

Sam Adkins--Number 12 For The Seahawks

In 1984, around this time, Seattle Seahawks president Mike McCormick announced that the team would retire the number 12 in honor of the crowds, that were so loud, it was virtually impossible for visiting team to win.  The thinking was there were 11 men on the field and one loud voice in the stands.  This has continued as the Hawks have moved from the Kingdome to Lumen Field.

I started to wonder, strangely after 37 years, who was the last Seahawk to wear number 12.  The answer would be Sam Adkins.  A backup quarterback.

Stan Barer Dies

We lost Stan Monday night.  He was 82.   He had been fighting cancer for well over a decade, seemingly winning every battle.  The last couple years were very tough as he lost his wife, Alta to cancer in 2019 and son, Aaron in 2020.

Stan was my cousin, my grandfather and his father were brothers.  Stan was brother to Burl and Jan.  We all grew up in Walla Walla.  Stan attended Green Park School and graduated from Walla Walla High School (Wa-Hi).

Stan left Walla Walla to go to the University of Washington.  After finishing law school, he joined the staff of Senator Warren Magnuson.  After playing a big part in writing the Civil Rights Act of 1964, he would go on to become the senator's administrative assistant.

Over lunch many years ago, Stan told me how he felt there was underlying discrimination growing up as he felt that many clubs had not picked him for membership because of his Jewish faith.  That apparently galvanized his commitment to civil rights.

Stan became a Washington insider.  He was in the "kitchen cabinet" of several presidents.  He played a part in an historic trade deal with China.  He was written up in the Walla Walla Union-Bulletin as an "expert on export".

Stan would go on to practice law in Seattle for several years in a huge firm known as Garvey, Shubert, And Barer.  He would also became part of the ownership group of Saltchuk Resources, which ran several local shipping companies including Totem Ocean Trailer Express and Foss

With his wife, Alta, Stan became an active donor in the arts community, as well as many charity causes.  His donation to the University Of Washington allowed more students from around the world to attend.

Stan also served on the University Of Washington Board Of Regents.

Just last September, it was announced that Stan had won the Gates Volunteer Service Award.

It seems silly, but one of my favorite memories of Stan was when we were going out for dinner with his mom, my Aunt Dorothy.  Stan and Alta had come to meet my then fiance, now my wife.  Stan and I were sitting on the couch dipping crackers into chopped liver at my aunt's apartment. On a more serious note, he was a rock of comfort in the deaths of both of my parents.

A private service will be held this week with Stan's immediate family.  A celebration of life for Stan's large circle of family and friends will be announced at a later date

Stan will really be missed.

Maple Valley Golfing Reindeer

At first, I thought it was a "golfing Santa", but the "golfing reindeer" is my favorite Christmas decoration in the neighborhood.  We see it when we walk the dog and has been a yearly tradition as long as we can remember.

Overnight Snow

Barely visable, the first trace of snow that I've seen this season, is on the ground.

Ex Monkee Michael Nesmith Dead At 78

Reports say that Michael Nesmith, who gained fame in the mid 1960s with The Monkees, a rock band created for a TV show, has died.   Although the band was originally fictional, the group released a number of successful hits, although a scandal was created when it was learned that the band didn't play it's own instruments.   Eventually, the band, would start playing the instruments.

Nesmith, from Texas was indeed versed in music and had written the Linda Ronstadt classic "Different Drum".

Nesmith's mother invented the correction fluid known today as "liquid paper"    Nesmith inherited the bulk of his mother's estate.

My favorite member of the Monkees, when the show was on, I wanted the "double breasted shirt" and the wool cap, that Nesmith wore on the show.

Nesmith's passing leaves Micky Dolenz as the only surviving member of the Monkees.  Davy Jones and Peter Tork preceded Nesmith in death.

Michael Nesmith was 78.

Adams Out For Season

Safety Jamal Adams who has drawn the wrath of Seahawks fans, not only for his salary, But what the Seahawks gave up to acquire his services, will be out for the season with a shoulder injury.

The Seattle Seahawks gave up two first round draft choices and a third round pick to acquire Adams from the New York Jets in 2020.  After recording 9.5 sacks last season, a record for a defensive back, the Seahawks awarded him with a contract making him the highest paid safety in the league.

Mitch Unfiltered's "Loserville" - Music Video

Those who know me, know that I have a very optimistic attitude toward Seattle sports.  This video shows fans of Seattle sports frustration with developments lately and was featured on the Mitch Unfiltered.
Written and performed by Seattle sports podcaster Mitch Levy, it is very creative and well produced!

No Time To Die--Review

Last Sunday while Deb was having her girlfriends over for Christmas Bunco, I slipped over to the Regal Cinemas in the Issaquah Highland to watch the latest, and maybe, last, James Bond flick, No Time To Die.

I've always enjoyed the Bond movies, which were packed with action, with little investment in the plot.  This installment of the series, has a very intricate plot. It draws on past shows that I may or may not have seen.  It also is a very emotional and vulnerable James Bond.

I'm not totally comfortable with this new portrayal of Bond, or with Daniel Craig in the role.  That said, I did enjoy this movie which is packed with plenty of action and some spectacular scenery, The movie is about two hours and 45 minutes,

U-Dub Names New Coach

Early this week, the Washington Huskies named Kellen DeBoer as it's new football coach.  DeBoer had been coach at Fresno State for two seasons.

Second year head coach Jimmy Lake was fired during the season, one that the Huskies would love to forget.
