The US Women's fencing team swept Gold, Silver, and Bronze in the Olympic Saber competition. A notable feat, considering that fencing is a sport that is more popular abroad.
Portland's Mariel Zagunis won took her second Gold Medal by defeating Dunwoody Georgia's Sada Jacobson. Sada came back and beat Ukrainian Sofia Velakaya for second place and the Silver Medal. Becca Ward, who is also from the Portland area, also beat Velakaya to take the Bronze. Jacobson was the only one of the medal winners not from Oregon, however her Great Grandmother, who was my Grandmother Barer's sister, did live in Portland.
