No discussion of famous Walla Wallans would be complete without mentioning William O Douglas. Douglas was born in Minnesota, but grew up mostly in Yakima. Douglas attended Whitman College in Walla Walla. He went on to serve America on the Supreme Court. Douglas was appointed by Franklin D Roosevelt in 1939. He resigned in 1975 during the Ford administration.
Douglas is known as a strong advocate for civil Liberties.
When entering the Whitman College Library, there is a display of charcoal etchings of every American President. This display was donated to the college by William O Douglas.
