He was 98.
One of the state's iconic figures, he served three terms as governor. Evans also served as president of Evergreen State University.
After the death of US Senator Scoop Jackson, a Democrat, Republican Evans was appointed to serve in his place in the Senate
Evans will be remembered for his moderate positions which appealed on both sides of the aisle.
His wife, Nancy, died earlier this year.
