I've been back for a week, but still have more to share. Peopeomoxmox, Chief of the Walla Walla tribe, has a statue across Rose Street from the city hall.

Peopeomoxmox (Yellow Bird) was one of the most powerful, wealthy, and diplomatically complex Indigenous leaders of the 19th-century Pacific Northwest. He owned thousands of cattle and horses, making him one of the wealthiest individuals in the entire Oregon Territory. He ran extensive trading expeditions down to Spanish California to trade furs and horses for cattle. He managed complex relationships with the Hudson's Bay Company, American missionaries, and rival tribes simultaneously. In 1844, his educated son, Elijah Hedding, was murdered by an American at Sutter’s Fort in California over a horse dispute. White authorities refused to punish the killer, profoundly altering Peopeomoxmox’s trust in American law. This event shifted him from a peaceful, pro-growth trader to a deeply skeptical leader cautious of white encroachment.
