Root Sports final Mariners Baseball signoff (September 28, 2025)

While the Mariners ended their best season in years, the last game yesterday (Sunday, September 28th, 2025), also meant the end of the Root Sports network. The network that brought us Mariner baseball through the years.
Brad Adam and Angie Mentink are expected to be back as MLB (Major League Baseball) will take on the broadcasts, but on-field reporter, Jen Mueller will not be.
I'm sure most of us felt a little sadness as the crew didn't hold back.

Root Sports Ends After 2025 Baseball Season

Root Sports, a channel and station that has carried Mariners and a handful of other teams is going away after this season according to Media Maven, a local broadcasting blog.

The channel/ station/ network has gone through many iterations, starting as Northwest Cable Sports in 1988.

In 2013, the Mariners purchased the majority stake in the network, although it has at times featured teams such as the Seattle Kraken.

The Seattle Times reports that MLB will take over production of regular season Mariner games for 2026 and beyond on a yet unnamed channel.

On-camera crew, such as Brad Adam and Angie Mentink (pictured above) are expected to transfer to the new network. However, production crew and advertising sales people are not expected stay on   The network has been headquartered in the Eastgate section of Bellevue. Announcers like Aaron Goldsmith and Rick Rizzs are employed by the team.

Naylor Delivers Clutch Double--Mariners Playoff Bound

In what looked like a blown chance against a National League cellar dweller, Josh Naylor delivered a bases clearing double to clinch a Mariner play-off berth. Naylor, could be the most popular mid season acquisition in team history.

With just a win needed, the team appeared to struggle, falling behind the Colorado Rockies 3-1.  The Rockies have lost 113 games so far, and were hungry to be spoilers.

The bases were loaded when reliever Juan Mejia hit two batters with pitches and walked another.  Naylor delivered one of only three hits of the evening for the Mariners, but it cleared the bases and gave the team it's only lead, which it wouldn't lose.

Wa-Hi Football Team Gets New Stadium

It's the end of an era in Walla Walla.  For generations, virtually all local outdoor sports were played at Borleske Stadium.  Now, my alma matter Wa-Hi, has an on-campus football stadium where it can play it's inter-scholastic games.

From what I hear, locker-room facilities at Borleske were outdated, and warm showers were not available.

My brother, Steve, last month, took me over to see the new field, where I got a nighttime shot of the outside. Click here.

Steve recently posted this picture of a game played there.

Congrats to Walla Walla High School football fans and Go Blue Devils!

Seahawks Get Season's First Win--Mariners Continue Winning Ways

I guess in New York or Chicago, this wouldn't be such a big deal, but yesterday (Sunday, September 14th, 2025), the Seattle Seahawks upset the Pittsburgh Steelers on 31-17 on the road, while the Mariners completed a perfect homestand by defeating the Los Angeles Angels 11-2.

It was definitely, a great day to be a Seattle sports fan!

Mark Volman Co-Founder Of The Turtles

Mark Volman, the co-founder and arguably, the most memorable of the 60s rock band The Turtles, died Friday (September 5th, 2025). He was 78.

Volman was known for his frizzy hair and voice, he seemed to also have the most comedic flair.  He could play almost any instrument.

The band's lead singer and also co-founder, Howard Kaylan, briefly lived in the Seattle area, where he and his wife were customers at our UPS Store in Crossroads, Bellevue.

I was able to watch Volman play at a couple of the Happy Together Tour concerts that we attended.

Police Presence In Maple Valley

Scary stuff here in the Maple Valley area.

Starbuck's And Red Hook Founder Bowker Dies

Ask most people who founded Starbuck's and they probably would say Howard Schultz and it's true that he would become the face of the company, but the real founder was a man named Gordon Bowker.

I read about Bowker in a column in a Seattle newspaper, years ago.

He would also help create another Seattle brand, Red Hook, a micro-brew beer.  At one time, you could say Red Hook and Starbuck's in the same sentence.  Of course, Starbuck's exploded, Red Hook, not so much.

He was also involved in Advertising in the Seattle area.

A while back, I saw a movie called "The Founder" on how a milkshake machine salesman, Ray Kroc, took over McDonald's and brought it to international fame, and Starbuck's story is eerily similar. Schultz was a coffee machine saleman.

Bowker died late last month at 82.  This article in the Post Alley blog pays tribute to him. Click here.

Legendary Cougar Basketball Coach George Raveling Dies

George Raveling, arguable one of the most important figure in the history of Washington State Cougar athletics has died. He was 88.

Raveling was head basketball coach at WSU from 1972-1983.  That included the time that I was there.  I got to interview him when I took the TV class.

Raveling led the Cougars to two NCAA tournament appearances.  Raveling was also the first African-American coach in what became the Pac 12.

After leaving Pullman, he had coaching stops at Iowa and later USC.

Raveling was reportedly a key player in getting Michael Jordan to sign a deal with NIKE for a brand of basketball shoes, a revolutionary move in the world of athletic apparel.

He also had the original script for Martin Luther King's speech for the 1963 March on Washington.  Raveling had worked security at the event.

Raveling played basketball at Villanova from 1957-1960.

Raveling was inducted into basketball's Naismith Hall of Fame in 2015.
