Claudine Longet Dies

Claudine Longet, the French singer who gained notoriety as first the wife of popular singer Andy Williams and later killer of her lover, famous skier, Spider Sabich, has died.

The beautiful Longet, was a fixture on the Williams Christmas specials with their children until her divorce from the singer in 1975.

The trial of her shooting of Savich at their Colorado home in 1976 attracted national attention. Longet was convicted of criminally negligent homicide. This sparked outrage as it was felt that her celebrity shielded from a murder charge.

Longet was 84 years old.

She brought a uniquely breathy, soft, and charming vocal style to American pop music, creating a chanson treatment for popular songs. Her portrayal of Michelle Monet in the 1968 comedy The Party alongside Peter Sellers is remembered as a charming and classic comedy performance. She was a rare French artist to achieve significant record sales in the US, with albums like Claudine (1967) and The Look of Love peaking on the Billboard charts. She was a staple of 1960s TV, bringing a touch of French glamour to popular shows like McHale's Navy, Dr. Kildare, and Hogan's Heroes. Her recordings, including covers of "Here, There and Everywhere" and "Love is Blue," are considered quintessential, sophisticated, and soothing easy-listening music from that era.
