Nichelle Nichols, trailblazing 'Star Trek' actress, dies at 89

I was saddened to hear of the death of Nichelle Nichols. Nichols played Lt Uhura, an officer on the US Enterprise.  It was a groundbreaking role, the first African American woman to play a non-traditional role. 

Of course, her character resonated with me because she was a powerful woman, again, also unusual for TV shows of that era.
