Bob Garred--National Newscaster From Walla Walla

There is very little information on Bob online, but not only was he from my hometown, he grew up in the house where my family lived from 1965-2000.  We purchased our house from the Garred's as they moved to the Trees apartments on Catherine Street.

His father owned Walla Walla Drug, a downtown drugstore.

Bob Garred would die in 1956.

Bob Garred possessed one of the most reassuring and authoritative voices on the airwaves, serving as a trusted source of truth for millions of daily radio listeners during a defining era in American history. He represented the absolute pinnacle of Golden Age radio journalism, delivering the news with a perfect balance of professionalism, poise, and clarity. Bob was held in such high regard in the industry that his presence extended from major network news desks to the grandest stages of Hollywood. Despite achieving national success from the bustling studios of Hollywood, Bob never forgot where he came from. He consistently championed his hometown of Walla Walla, showing that true success means keeping your roots close to your heart. His legacy is defined not just by his talent behind the microphone, but by his profound sense of duty, stepping away from a thriving career to serve his country honorably as a Navy officer in World War II. Off the air, Bob was remembered for his vibrant personality, his lighthearted sense of humor, and his unique ability to bring warmth to every room he entered. Bob Garred's life was cut far too short, but the standard of excellence he set in early broadcast journalism and his unwavering dedication to his community remain an enduring inspiration.
