Whitman College, in my hometown of Walla Walla, is igniting controversy nationally by changing the name of it's on campus newspaper. The paper, known as "The Pioneer", has been publishing since 1896. The college, known for being much more liberal than it's surrounding town, claims that the paper's name honors "white invaders". Many though say, that even though the area's pioneers were far from perfect, they made sacrifices to make better lives for later generations. The paper is hoping that the name change will encourage such discussion. No new name for the paper has been announced.
Too political correct... Keep the name it was first given I say.
ReplyDeleteThis kind of stuff annoys me BIG TIME. I mean come on. The Pioneers did what they thought was necessary to secure a life for their families. Yes it was hard on the Native Americans and some of what went on was very wrong but let's face it life goes on and it's time to "Get over it" - Changing the paper's name isn't going to change history.
ReplyDeleteThe "Get Over It" argument is specious. I mean, I can equally say, "The native americans did what they thought was necessary to secure a life for their families. Yes, it was hard on the pioneers and some of what when on was very wrong but let's face it, life goes on." You are correct that changing a paper's name isn't going to change history, but it will change the present and future. If your philosophy is to "get over it" then I seriously and kindly suggest you take your own advice.
