Ted Turner in his younger days was compared to the classic movie character Rhett Butler, coincidently, Turner's actual name was Robert Edward Turner III, the initials spell RET.

Here is a comparison between Ted Turner and Rhett Butler: Similarities: The Modern Rhett Persona Southern Mavericks: Both men were considered outsiders in their own way despite operating within Southern society. Rhett was a cynical scoundrel despised by the Old Guard, while Turner was known as the Mouth of the South, often challenging established media networks. Risk-Taking & Entrepreneurship: Rhett was a blockade runner and speculator who thrived on high-stakes ventures during the Civil War. Similarly, Turner took massive risks to start CNN, a move conventional wisdom predicted would bankrupt him.Charm and Swagger: Both are described as charismatic, confident, and unapologetically frank, willing to speak their minds regardless of the audience.Fascination with the Film: Turner’s obsession with Gone with the Wind was profound, he bought the film library containing it, restored it, and named his son Rhett.Contrarian Views: Rhett criticized Southern aristocracy as cotton and arrogance. Turner often criticized his own industry, famously calling television a vast wasteland.

  2. Turner's belief that television was a vast wasteland has perhaps never been more accurate than it is today. Seasons are shorter, new episodes are fewer, the same films and shows are re-run over and over again, and the advertising has never been more incessant, repetitive, unintelligent, and annoying! Even CNN isn't what it used to be.
