In a heartstopper that went down to the last second, the Seattle Kraken beat the Colorado Avalanche 2-1.
The Kraken will advance to the next series.

Welcome To The Seahawks--Devon Witherspoon

Cornerback Devon Witherspoon from USC was the Seahawks first draft pick in 2023. The Seahawks were able to pick in the number 5 spot because of the 2022 trade that sent Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos.

Also in the first round the Seahawks picked wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba from Ohio State.

Kraken Even Series With Overtime Victory

In a game that may go down in Seattle sports history, Jordan Eberle scored an overtime goal to defeat the Colorado Avalanche 3-2.  It was the team's first home playoff victory ever.

The prospects for the Kraken did not look promising as they had lost the last couple of games, including the first ever home game, Friday.

The series now goes back to Denver, tied at 2 games apiece. The next game scheduled for Wednesday (April 26th, 2023).

Crowd Celebrate's Sea Dragon Touchdown

From the Sea Dragons last game of the regular season, this would have been a money shot of a touchdown pass, had the folks in front of me not stood up.

Watching The Sea Dragons

Deb and I had a great time with Marjie and Rick at the Sea Dragon game.
In XFL action, the Seattle Sea Dragons defeated the Las Vegas Vipers 28-9.

Why did this Iranian Muslim save Jews in the Holocaust?

Another great story in the "Unpacked" series on You Tube.  I had no idea about this story, but it is captivating.

Jackie Robinson Night Commemorative Hat

I didn't attend Jackie Robinson night at T-Mobile Park Saturday, but my friends Marjie and Rick did.  They brought a souvenir cap to me that the Mariners were giving away.

Israel stands still amidst sirens to mark Holocaust Remembrance Day

We remember victims of the Holocaust today.  In Israel, when the air raid horn sounds on Yom Ha Shoah, everything stops.

Go Kraken!

Kraken Face Avalanche Tuesday

The Seattle Kraken are in the playoffs for first time and will begin playing this Tuesday (April 18th,2023).  What many fans may consider bad news is the second year franchise will face-off against the defending Stanley Cup Champions, the Colorado Avalanche.

For me, it brings back memories of when the Seahawks, who barely made the NFL playoffs in 2011, were pitted against the New Orlean Saints, defending Super Bowl champions.  The 'Hawks pulled off one of the biggest upsets in NFL history.

Marty Lanser--WSU DJ

I just remembered in the last couple days, a figure from my college days.  Marty Lanser worked at the student radio station KUGR at WSU.  If I remember correctly, he was, maybe a senior while I was a freshman, but he had a great delivery for the top 40 station.
One day, while listening, my roommate told me that he was blind. I really couldn't believe it, I was only 19 and the thought that a blind man could be so commanding on the radio didn't quite sink in.
When the campus newspaper, The Daily Evergreen did a story on him, it confirmed what my roommate had told me.
When I got on board at KUGR, I think that he had already graduated. I think he finished at the semester.   I did get to meet him when he did a fill in shift or something.  He told me that he had a job lined up at KUJ.  I would meet him again, where he told me that the job had fallen through.
When I was by KUJ, a Walla Walla station, they said that he wouldn't be able to read the news.  It hit me several decades later that they probably just didn't want to make maybe the smallest accommodations for him.  My guess is that they would be minimal and pay dividends.  He seemed pretty independent.
From what I could find on the web, it looks like he did carve out a great career in radio.  I am in the process of seeing if I can contact him.  Maybe I can expand on this story.

My Brother And Sister In Law Train Dogs

For many years, my brother, Steve Barer and his wife Dawn have had a dog behavior and training business in Walla Walla.

Steve, of all the members of our family, has grown up with a genuine love of dogs. Dawn is a registered veterinary technician (RVT).  I stumbled across the website the other day and was impressed.

You can find the website by clicking here

Steve is also the district manage at Oxarc.  An industrial gas company on 4th and Rose.

Danny Bonaduce Featured In Seattle Times

Danny Bonaduce, who played the rascally funny Danny Partridge in the early 70s TV show, The Partridge Family is grown up, apparently, in many ways. I was beginning Junior High when the show was running on ABC and Danny was, perhaps the funniest on the show, he was also the one closest to my age. He bounced well off Dave Madden, who played the group's manage Rubin Kincaid on the show.

I have done several posts on Bonaduce, since his radio show moved to this area.

It's well known that Bonaduce has had well known struggles with alcohol and drugs, but apparently, those days are behind him as he has settled down here in the Seattle area.

The Seattle Times has done a feature on Bonaduce that ran in this Sunday's Pacific NW Magazine. To read it, click here

Kraken Get Playoff Spot

The "drought" is over!"  Ok, just a little smart-aleck fun on my part.  The Seattle Kraken have clinched a spot in the Stanley Cup playoffs in only its second year of existence.

The team punched a ticket with a 4-2 victory last night (Thursday, April 6th, 2023) over the Arizona Coyotes.

In 2009, the Seattle Sounders made the postseason in its inaugural season. However, amongst what many would consider the top 4 major league professional sports (football, baseball, basketball, and ice hockey), The Kraken had the fastest rise to the post season play of any team in Seattle in those sports.

San Diego State Loses--But Makes Top Two

No, they couldn't beat the UConn Huskies, but San Diego State, our friend's alma matter, shocked everyone by going to the NCAA championship game.  A great "Cinderella" story that gave us someone to root for.

Political Satirist Mark Russell Dies at 90

I was sad to read about the death of Mark Russell.  Russell was a unique comedian.   You could watch him on Public TV.  I would often watch his schtick on TV, rarely watching more than a couple minutes before switching channels, I know that is not a ringing endorsement, but in a couple minutes, he could work in a few zingers.
I did watch his entire show in the 1980s when he appeared at Cordiner Hall on the Whitman campus in Walla Walla,.  His timing was flawless, and he was a master of the pun. His songs, in which he accompanied himself with a piano, seemed like they were written on the spot.
He also skewered both sides of the aisle, and as such, had appeal from across the spectrum.  Mark Russell was 90.
